I probably sound like a broken record when I say the hunt for skincare that is not laden with toxic or harmful chemicals is a long and difficult process. You need to find something that works and will not cause side effects (like acne!) Therefore, I decided to cash in my Shoppers Optimum Points on the natural skincare brand Dr. Roebucks!

Dr. Roebuck’s Skincare Review

dr.roebucks skincare

Dr. Roebuck’s was developed in Sydney Australia in 1978 by two physicians with children who had eczema. The brand continued by providing different skincare products and the promise that they contain only quality ingredients with no fillers, BPA, Parabens and they are not tested on animals.

I picked up a few products from the Dr. Roebuck’s line including their: Cleanse, Polish, Toner and Lip Balm. I have been using them for the past couple months and today I will be reviewing what I think about this skincare line. (Make sure to grab a cup of tea because this could get long! ☕️)

Dr.Roebuck’s Cleanse – Nourishing Cream Cleanser $22.95 CAD

A natural crème cleanser formulated with 6 potent anti-oxidants, which reverse free-radical damage and assist in delaying the aging process. With calming and hydrating properties, CLEANSE is specifically designed for sensitive skin. -Dr.Roebuck’s Website

The ingredient list for this cleanser is rather impressive. It has no fragrance added and features extracts from coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, coneflower extract, pot marigold extract and oats. Therefore this cleanser is nothing short of moisturizing.

A big downside to this cleanser is that the shea butter and coconut oil could be problematic for acne-prone skin. After rinsing off you will definitely feel a residue left behind (although the directions suggest you use this in tandem with the polish and tone products.)

I am very turned away from this due to the smell. It is not scented but it does not smell good. I’m not sure how to describe it… it reminds me of old lip product scents from the 90’s – and I know that’s a very vague description. Although if you are sensitive to scented products this will definitely be a winner for you, I just can’t get over the weird non-scented scent, y’know?

I only use this product in the morning as I find that it may be just a bit too moisturizing and not cleansing enough to help clear my pores of makeup at night. I haven’t noticed a change in acne which is a good thing.

Dr. Roebuck's Polish

Dr.Roebuck’s Polish – 2-in-1 Facial Scrub $39.95 CAD

This deep-cleansing, purifying, non-abrasive facial scrub and mask gently removes dead skin cells leaving the skin revitalized and beautifully radiant. Kaolin draws out impurities and toxins from the skin and clears it of excess dirt and pollution. Jojoba beads, Grapefruit and Peppermint oils help deeply cleanse and exfoliate. -Dr.Roebucks Website

Unlike the cleanser, this face product smells much nicer. You can definitely pick up a hint of the peppermint smell upon application. It’s very gentle for the skin and exfoliates without drying which can sometimes be hard to find with facial scrubs.

I used to be a big fan of the St.Ives Apricot Facial Scrub until I realized that the salicylic acid was causing unwanted dry patches on my skin – since then I’ve been using this and it has most definitely taken the place of my one beloved St.Ives product.

Due to the wax and glycerin in this product I do find that it can also leave a bit of a residue on the skin. I do find that the Dr.Roebucks Toner helps to remove the residue very well.

Dr.Roebuck’s Tone $29.95 CAD

A daily toner formulated with natural ingredients that work in harmony to brighten, tighten and soothe even the most sensitive of skin. – Dr.Roebucks Website

My first experience with a toner came from one of the Avon skincare brands – it had a high concentration of salicylic acid and alcohol and made your skin burn upon application. I always assumed that’s how you know a toner is working… your skin feels like it’s burning everything off!

Until trying this it had been years since I used a toner. I found them drying and painful; literally wincing when I applied it. However, after reading the directions for the Cleanse routine it said that I should follow with the Dr. Roebuck’s Toner and I figured that if I want to try it out… I’d better do it right!

This toner has changed what the word toner means to me! It doesn’t burn, I don’t prepare myself for pain upon application of this. It’s life changing, really! The Dr.Roebucks Toner is a bit on the pricier end of things… but it only has seven ingredients: Purified Water, Hamamelis Virginiana, Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera,Polysorbate-20, Grapefruit Oil, Peppermint Oil. There’s no salicylic acid or alcohol, hallelujah!

I use this after washing my face with the cleanse and polish; it does tingle (most likely due to the peppermint oil) but only for a short while. The Glycolic acid helps to remove any dead skin cells that could lead to clogged pores. This has probably been my favourite Dr.Roebucks out of the four that I’ve tried.

DR. ROEBUCK'S SKINCARE REVIEW

Dr.Roebuck’s Lips – Lip Balm $10.00 CAD

LIPS is a unique blend of beeswax and essential oils, this luscious lips formula will keep your lips soft and supple. – Dr. Roebuck’s Website

This lip balm is almost like a gloss. It comes out of a tube and leaves a glossy finish on your lips – therefore it does not last for a long time and you will most likely have to reapply within the hour.

The ingredients in this product are once again nothing but good: Shea Butter, Macadamia Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Grapefruit Oil, Peppermint Oil. Unfortunately… I just didn’t find it moisturizing enough for the cold and dry weather that we are having during this Canadian winter (if you even really want to call it winter.)

I think that this product would probably be better in the summer and if you just wanted to wear a glossy lip for the day. It doesn’t really help moisturize as much as one would hope. It was kind of a bummer to be honest.

So there it is! I’ve reviewed four of the Dr. Roebuck’s skincare products and can definitely say that I would definitely repurchase the Polish and Toner. The Cleanse and Lips products did not really do the trick for me.

Dr. Roebuck’s is available at Shopper’s Drug Mart and the Beauty Boutique website! As well Dr. Roebuck’s has recently been added at Sephora in the United States too – it’s pretty exciting that more beauty retailers are starting to include more natural beauty brands in their stores. One step forward!
