Aromatherapy | Essential Oils, Diffusers & Benefits

Essential oils are a fantastic and natural way to add a nice scent into your home – don’t get me wrong, I love my wallflowers from Bath and Body Works… but sometimes you need targeted Aromatherapy to help adjust your mood.

Aromatherapy: doTERRA Petal Diffuser

Doterra Diffuser
Cloudy & Rainy days do not make for good interior photographs

The doTERRA Petal Diffuser is my weapon of choice when it comes to aromatherapy – I was gifted this by my step-mum and use it consistently! You can easily mix essential oils into the water and have them diffused into the air for one hour, two hours or three hours. There’s also an LED light which you can choose to leave on or off. For the size of the diffuser, the output is impressive. I can have it in the kitchen and smell it all the way into my living room.

If you’re looking for a gift idea for someone who loves essential oils – this is a fantastic choice!

Aromatherapy: Blends

Aromatherapy Essential OIls

I have a fairly small collection of essential oils – slowly but surely the collection is growing! Surprisingly, Winners and Homesense offer a great selection of essential oils.

The great thing about Aromatherapy with essential oils, is that you can customize the scents according to what you enjoy! The only unfortunate thing about them is when you live with someone who has a very different sense of smell than yourself… (For example, my boyfriend hates Patchouli, where I’m rather indifferent to the scent.)

Aromatherapy my Personal Favourite Blends

Lavender + Rosemary

Clean and calming, Lavender and Rosemary are great for relieving stress and clearing the mind. The Lavender acts as a great base for the very upbeat Rosemary scent.

Eucalyptus + Lemon

When you’re feeling under the weather this is a great blend to help open up your sinuses. Now it’s not something I would use everyday… but great for days when you can’t put down the tissue box!

Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Lavender + Peppermint

Another calming and clarifying scent. To be honest, I absolutely adore the smell of Lavender so I tend to mix it with everything! I like to use this as a pick me up on Sundays/Saturdays when I have work to get done… but still want to relax, y’know?

Orange + Peppermint or Lemon + Peppermint

Love these scents for the kitchen! After a nice deep clean I like to put the diffuser on the counter and let it waft away any lingering smells.

Aromatherapy DoTerra Holiday Joy

Holiday Joy

My favourite holiday scent! It has a mix of Orange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Clove and Douglas Fir to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. You can guarantee that this will be my go-to scent up until Christmas.

I began using a diffuser for Aromatherapy in the Summer and it has quickly become my favourite source for adding scents into my home. The ease of use is fantastic – and you’re not stuck with one scent for more than a few hours. How great is that? Plus it comes with some great benefits.

Aromatherapy Benefits

Lavender is one of the most well-known and widely used essential oils which has a variety of uses other than aromatherapy. When used for aromatherapy it’s both great for calming (which is why it is in so many sleeping sprays) as well as stimulant to help clear the mind.

Blends with: Lemon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary.

Rosemary is a great stimulant – instantly uplifting once it is inhaled. It keeps the mind alert and awake, which is why it is great in conjunction with Lavender as a base scent.

Blends with: Lemon, Peppermint and Lavender.

Peppermint is also a great stimulant which can be helpful when you’re feeling stressed or tired. Like Rosemary, it can be helpful when you need to concentrate (essay writing anyone?)

Blends with: Rosemary, Lemon, Lavender and Eucalyptus.

Orange will instantly improve your mood – this scent is uplifting, happy and warm. It has been shown to be a great anti-depressant.

Blends with: Other citrus scents, Cinnamon, Cloves and Nutmeg

Eucalyptus will instantly clear your sinuses while being relaxing and calming. It’s no wonder this scent is in so many spa products. It’s also a scent that will help keep you awake, another great option for stressful days.

Blends with: Lavender and Peppermint.

Aromatherapy, Essential Oils and Benefits

Hopefully this post has provided a little bit of insight on uses of essential oils and how awesome they are! Next time you’re feeling a little down or stressed out – reach for some Lavender + Rosemary to help uplift your mood and let Aromatherapy do the work!

  • I’ve never really looked in to aromatherapy before. Thanks for all the info on it! I don’t know if I have a favorite scent as I find so many of them kind of yucky haha. Maybe peppermint? I definitely hate lavender haha.

    • Aww – I guess the nice thing about Aromatherapy is that you can choose the scents you do like! When you use a diffuser, the scents aren’t as strong as they are straight out of the bottle too. Peppermint is a nice one 🙂

  • Ahhh I totally need one of these diffusers!! I’m going to need to go on amazon after this…
I love the aromatherapy benefits you included since I never really looked into it myself but all I knew was that it was relaxing hehe

  • I need this! I was obsessed with diffusers a while back but couldn’t find any great scents that I wanted so I stopped buying them. But your combination scent just sounds amazing! x

    • DoTERRA makes some great combinations if you can find where to buy them where you live! It’s all about playing around and mixing + matching to make the perfect scents for you!

  • I’ve never been a huge fan of essential oils. It all feels too difficult and time consuming for me hehehe. But I do continuously hear about the benefits, especially for stress. I really should adopt this into my lifestyle.

    • I used to think they were messy/ complicated as well, but they aren’t really. Diffusers are much easier than the candle burning ones as well. Even just getting two scents to start out is an easy way to test it out 🙂

  • I would love to receive one of these diffusers & some oils for Christmas! xx

  • I had e lamp for essential oils a few years ago and still have some essential oils, but I stoppe when i had the kids. i didn’t want anything burning when they were around. These days I stick to scented candles, purely for the smell, not for any benefits. The diffuser looks nice, I have seen it around before and was tempted.

    • Makes sense why you wouldn’t want to have the risk of a fire/spilling with children running around your house! Scented candles are great too! Especially because there’s not much thought involved other than lighting them haha

      • Not only that, essential oils can be irritating for small children and are not considered safe if a child younger than 1 year is around.

        • lindseyelyse

          Good to know!

  • I remember my parents had something similar and I was always sitting next to it to smell that amazing scents 🙂 I like lavender and peppermint, lavender scent just makes me want to sleep so it is great for nights where I can’t sleep properly.

  • I love oils, and grew up using a lot ifthem
because my mum always uses natural oils for healing purposes. Probably why I was never really sick at all when I was a child. Lavender and peppermint is also great to use as an insect repellent for summer or camping, etc. /Madison

I need an aromatheapy day! Perfect Illusion

  • Honestly speaking,  this is the first time I’ve heard of essential oils. I don’t even know about diffusers! The most similar I’ve ever encountered is scented candles. My friend gave me a lavender-scented candle once but the scent is too strong for me.  I think I’d love to try eucalyptus + lemon though.  I’ve never seen that combination before but it sounds refreshing and clean.

    • Oh really!? They are AMAZING – basically, natural plant/flower can be an essential oil. Lemon and Eucalyptus are amazing. Great for your kitchen or even for a relaxing bath to make you feel fresh & clean. There’s so many great benefits to using essential oils & diffusers! Hopefully one day you can give it a go 🙂

  • I have heard about these before and tried a few out but haven’t really given it enough attention. I do wanna give it another try soon!

  • I’ve been meaning to get my mom a diffuser, she’s been wanting a fancy one for a while but I didn’t want to stick around with the usual brands at the big malls. I’ll have to take a look a this! I love eucalpytus oils for headaches/colds as well as peppermint when I feel like I have a stomacheache!

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

That diffuser looks like such a handy little thing, I love it! 🙂 I quite enjoy just burning candles in my home, but using a diffuser seems just as fun. I absolutely love the sound of your scent combination, I can just smell them through my laptop screen! 😀 Holiday Joy sounds absolutely amazing and definietly like something I’d enjoy especially around Christmas time. 🙂 Thank you for sharing! xoxo

  • I so agree about having a diffuser! I have 2 actually; one for my bedroom and another for my living room. I love vanilla scents to unwind as well, but eucalyptus is my favourite as it’s just so calming and spa-like.
