Why I Won’t Stop Shaving My Armpits…

I’m sure you have all been witness to the anti-shave movement spreading throughout the internet. This has been going on some time with Miley Cyrus, and Madonna among many other notable women supporting the feminist movement to stop shaving your pits.

I’m not anti-feminist, I certainly believe that women’s rights are important and that the feminist movements toward equal rights have been well fought for. No one should be treated as an object; that is for sure.

So now that I’ve made myself clear about that… I don’t see why women who stop shaving their armpits is a big deal.

Let me list the reasons why I have no interest in joining this movement:

  1. Antiperspirant/ deodorant works better when applied directly to the skin—in fact, the point of antiperspirant is to block the glands that sweat releases from…
  2. It feels more comfortable. I’ve let my armpit hair grow for a week, max. I didn’t enjoy the itchiness caused by the hair finally filling in the gap. I guess this is more personal preference, but it wasn’t comfortable feeling a small pet under my arms.
  3. We’re not living in the middle-ages, I don’t need that extra hair to keep me warm… so I’m not going to keep it. (That was the purpose, right?)
  4. I think this will be the most widely debated point; it looks better. Again, personal preference but I don’t want to see it.
  5. It’s my choice.

It only becomes an issue when it is made to look like an issue.
If someone doesn’t like you the way you wish to be then they’re not worth your time, girlfriend.

  • Yaaaas. I totally agree with you. While I understand both sides of this argument, I think it’s really a “to each their own” thing.
    xx, Pia

    • I’m glad! Unfortunately I’m sure there’s people out there that don’t think the same thing 🙁
      Thanks for the comment!

  • Madonna did this already – a long time ago – but I don’t know what her intent was at the time. Just to be rebellious, I imagine. I don’t get this movement…trend…personally, don’t shave if you really don’t want to, but also don’t shave just because others are doing so, or you feel pressured. That’s not cool either. I won’t be joining them. To each their own, for sure!

  • I totally get you and I get where the movement is coming from and trying to prove too. Like you said it’s such an individual choice, if a man or a woman wants to shave let them if they don’t that’s fine too. Such things turn into trends sometimes which is pretty much contradicting what they’re trying to do, I feel.

    • Exactly! Let people do what they want 🙂
      Thanks for the comment!

  • Pro-shaving! I have nothing against people who don’t, and if I’m home I won’t shave, but I am just used to it and it feels more comfortable knowing I don’t have hairy armpits haha

    • Right!? Haha, my thoughts exactly 🙂
      Thanks for the comment!

Exactly. Feminist movement is about allowing women to be who they want: you want to shave? Go ahead! You want to stay-at-home-mom? Amazing! You want to be a CEO? Great!

It is important though that celebrities do these kinds of movement, to give people like me a break – because I stopped shaving my arm pits a few months ago, and I have learned to adore them. (I did it as an exercise, to understand WHY I was shaving them in the first place). Shaving does not make you an anti-feminist, and I hate when people start using “feminism” this way.

So great article and excellent meme 😉

    • Thank you! It’s great to hear someone who has stopped doing it 🙂
I think the message gets lost when the word ‘feminism’ comes up, for sure!

Totally get where they are coming from but I won’t stop shaving my arm pits!

Everyone should do what makes them happy, but I would find it too sweaty to be honest!

    • Another good point! I didn’t even think of that.

  • I am with you there girl, I will keep shaving!

  • Totally with you on all of this!

  • I have to agree with you! Personally, I feel so much better with shaved armpits so won’t be stopping either! xx

  • Pro shaving! I mean I just like clean armpits in general – any gender.
