Dr. Roebuck’s Skincare | Review

Dr. Roebuck’s Skincare | Review

I probably sound like a broken record when I say the hunt for skincare that is not laden with toxic or harmful chemicals is a long and difficult process. You need to find something that works and will not cause side effects (like acne!) Therefore, I decided to cash in my Shoppers Optimum Points on the natural skincare brand Dr. Roebucks!

Dr. Roebuck’s Skincare Review

dr.roebucks skincare

Dr. Roebuck’s was developed in Sydney Australia in 1978 by two physicians with children who had eczema. The brand continued by providing different skincare products and the promise that they contain only quality ingredients with no fillers, BPA, Parabens and they are not tested on animals.

I picked up a few products from the Dr. Roebuck’s line including their: Cleanse, Polish, Toner and Lip Balm. I have been using them for the past couple months and today I will be reviewing what I think about this skincare line. (Make sure to grab a cup of tea because this could get long! ☕️)

Dr.Roebuck’s Cleanse – Nourishing Cream Cleanser $22.95 CAD

A natural crème cleanser formulated with 6 potent anti-oxidants, which reverse free-radical damage and assist in delaying the aging process. With calming and hydrating properties, CLEANSE is specifically designed for sensitive skin. -Dr.Roebuck’s Website

The ingredient list for this cleanser is rather impressive. It has no fragrance added and features extracts from coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, coneflower extract, pot marigold extract and oats. Therefore this cleanser is nothing short of moisturizing.

A big downside to this cleanser is that the shea butter and coconut oil could be problematic for acne-prone skin. After rinsing off you will definitely feel a residue left behind (although the directions suggest you use this in tandem with the polish and tone products.)

I am very turned away from this due to the smell. It is not scented but it does not smell good. I’m not sure how to describe it… it reminds me of old lip product scents from the 90’s – and I know that’s a very vague description. Although if you are sensitive to scented products this will definitely be a winner for you, I just can’t get over the weird non-scented scent, y’know?

I only use this product in the morning as I find that it may be just a bit too moisturizing and not cleansing enough to help clear my pores of makeup at night. I haven’t noticed a change in acne which is a good thing.

Dr. Roebuck's Polish

Dr.Roebuck’s Polish – 2-in-1 Facial Scrub $39.95 CAD

This deep-cleansing, purifying, non-abrasive facial scrub and mask gently removes dead skin cells leaving the skin revitalized and beautifully radiant. Kaolin draws out impurities and toxins from the skin and clears it of excess dirt and pollution. Jojoba beads, Grapefruit and Peppermint oils help deeply cleanse and exfoliate. -Dr.Roebucks Website

Unlike the cleanser, this face product smells much nicer. You can definitely pick up a hint of the peppermint smell upon application. It’s very gentle for the skin and exfoliates without drying which can sometimes be hard to find with facial scrubs.

I used to be a big fan of the St.Ives Apricot Facial Scrub until I realized that the salicylic acid was causing unwanted dry patches on my skin – since then I’ve been using this and it has most definitely taken the place of my one beloved St.Ives product.

Due to the wax and glycerin in this product I do find that it can also leave a bit of a residue on the skin. I do find that the Dr.Roebucks Toner helps to remove the residue very well.

Dr.Roebuck’s Tone $29.95 CAD

A daily toner formulated with natural ingredients that work in harmony to brighten, tighten and soothe even the most sensitive of skin. – Dr.Roebucks Website

My first experience with a toner came from one of the Avon skincare brands – it had a high concentration of salicylic acid and alcohol and made your skin burn upon application. I always assumed that’s how you know a toner is working… your skin feels like it’s burning everything off!

Until trying this it had been years since I used a toner. I found them drying and painful; literally wincing when I applied it. However, after reading the directions for the Cleanse routine it said that I should follow with the Dr. Roebuck’s Toner and I figured that if I want to try it out… I’d better do it right!

This toner has changed what the word toner means to me! It doesn’t burn, I don’t prepare myself for pain upon application of this. It’s life changing, really! The Dr.Roebucks Toner is a bit on the pricier end of things… but it only has seven ingredients: Purified Water, Hamamelis Virginiana, Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera,Polysorbate-20, Grapefruit Oil, Peppermint Oil. There’s no salicylic acid or alcohol, hallelujah!

I use this after washing my face with the cleanse and polish; it does tingle (most likely due to the peppermint oil) but only for a short while. The Glycolic acid helps to remove any dead skin cells that could lead to clogged pores. This has probably been my favourite Dr.Roebucks out of the four that I’ve tried.

DR. ROEBUCK'S SKINCARE REVIEW

Dr.Roebuck’s Lips – Lip Balm $10.00 CAD

LIPS is a unique blend of beeswax and essential oils, this luscious lips formula will keep your lips soft and supple. – Dr. Roebuck’s Website

This lip balm is almost like a gloss. It comes out of a tube and leaves a glossy finish on your lips – therefore it does not last for a long time and you will most likely have to reapply within the hour.

The ingredients in this product are once again nothing but good: Shea Butter, Macadamia Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Grapefruit Oil, Peppermint Oil. Unfortunately… I just didn’t find it moisturizing enough for the cold and dry weather that we are having during this Canadian winter (if you even really want to call it winter.)

I think that this product would probably be better in the summer and if you just wanted to wear a glossy lip for the day. It doesn’t really help moisturize as much as one would hope. It was kind of a bummer to be honest.

So there it is! I’ve reviewed four of the Dr. Roebuck’s skincare products and can definitely say that I would definitely repurchase the Polish and Toner. The Cleanse and Lips products did not really do the trick for me.

Dr. Roebuck’s is available at Shopper’s Drug Mart and the Beauty Boutique website! As well Dr. Roebuck’s has recently been added at Sephora in the United States too – it’s pretty exciting that more beauty retailers are starting to include more natural beauty brands in their stores. One step forward!

Have you tried anything from Dr. Roebuck’s?

Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts on this range, darling! 🙂 I have never heard of this brand before, but it seems like they have some lovely products even though not everything lived up to your expectations! I would deffo stay away from the cleanser, as my skin is very oily and acne prone, so I don’t think that would be the best choice! I like the sound of that toner, however. 🙂 A lot of toners just aren’t gentle enough, but this one seems fab whilst very effective! Thanks for sharing, lovely. <3 xoxo

    • If there’s anything to buy from this range, the toner is definitely the one! And yes, for oily skin the cleanser probably wouldn’t be quite enough! Thank you for reading, Kay! <3

  • I love learning about these wonderful natural products ! I actually thought toner was meant to feel like that until I read this post.. oh my gosh I shall definitely be ordering some of this ! although it leaves residue when used on it’s own, I don’t mind because I’d probably use them as a group 🙂

    Lots of love, Marianne xxx

    • I think they are based out of Australia! I honestly thought that toner was supposed to feel like that as well haha – I guess it’s just all the harsh ingredients in typical toners! Thanks for the lovely comment, Marianne!

  • I’ve never heard of this brand but it sounds amazing I love getting to know new brands.

    Lauren x Huggled

    • For sure! Dr. Roebucks has only recently come to North America. I know that it is from Australia orginally 🙂

  • I’ve heard great things about this brand and they’ve been on my radar, although I did receive one product from them that has a LONG list of ingredients which I feel goes against their minimal ingredients philosophy. I have not tried it yet cause some scored red on CosDNA, but I just have not looked at them in depth yet to see why they’re red.
It’s too bad that half the products you got didn’t work out for you, but at least now you know.

    • Oh weird, which one was that? Each of these ones has a fairly short list. That surprises me! I’m definitely going to look into that (make sure my info is correct haha!)

Update: I just checked the website on cosDNA and it looks like it’s the anti-aging serum that has some ingredients with a high score. The Retinol and the Citral. Retinol should only be used in fairly small concentrations and only at night as it can increase the likelihood of sunburns and cancer. The Citral has been linked to skin irritation and allergies as it’s very strong. In small amounts it would be less of an issue… though probably best to avoid if you have sensitive skin!

  • Amelia

I’ve never heard of this brand, I’m big on skincare so I’ll have to try them out soon! Thanks for sharing x

  • I always love learning about new skincare brands so thank you for sharing this! The polish and the toner both sounds really nice, especially the toner. I love how it only has 7 ingredients and no alcohol (way too many toners add this, ugh)!

    Jenny // Geeky Posh

  • This is the first time I’m reading about this brand and I love how small the ingredient list is! As you know I have tons of skincare to go through so not sure if I’ll get get around to trying this brand. Great review, Lindsey.

    • Haha, don’t we all somehow hoard skincare products? I have no idea how it happens! Thanks for reading, Shireen!

  • This is the first time I heard about the brand! I’m not really good at trying new brands, I always go back to my trusty ones which I know would not disappoint me 🙂 I like the sound of the toner, I don’t think I’d like scrub. I just don’t like the products that leave residue. At least it wouldn’t be something for a lazy&quick skincare routine 🙂

    Ela BellaWorld

    • Definitely not meant for a quick and easy skincare routine – but the toner is great on it’s own! Thanks for reading, Ela!

  • I’ve been trying more green brands lately and I’m also having trouble adjusting to the non-scent scent XD I guess in the long term it’ll be worth it because those products are better for our skin. I spotted this brand on the sephora site the other week but had never read any reviews on them. I don’t think I spotted the toner but I’ll have to keep my eye out for it 😀

  • I’ve been really enjoying reading about the different products you’re trying out lately! I also used to use the apricot scrub but it was too intense for my skin. If you’re ever looking to try out other toners, you should look into Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner. Super cheap, and I love how it works (gotta get over the scent though, which I did eventually LOL).

    Kathryn • simplykk.com

    • Thanks Kathryn! That one sounds good. I’m pretty particular about weird smelling things though… I think most witch hazel toners have a funky scent, eh?

  • pennyanddash

Love this very very through review of skin products! I needed new skincare products to try out so this post was so helpful.

  • SamanthaSeries

I’m definitely interested in this brand, especially since seeing their display at Shoppers! I got a sample of the face cream (I forget the name) and it was nice but I didn’t like that it had mineral oil as a main ingredient. But the rest of the products seem so nice, that toner especially!

    Samantha Series

    • Yeah! Some of their products are hit and miss… like most you have to double check the ingredient list. The toner is amazing!

  • I’ve tried the cleanser before and chucked it because of the smell too!! Glad I wasn’t the only one or thought I got a bad batch. I’m curious to try the toner now – I love a good toner especially a life changing one!!

    • Okay – I’m glad it wasn’t just me who thought it was pretty horrible LOL. The toner is absolutely amazing.

  • This looks like a great brand, the formulations are nice. And quite affordable too!

  • I’ve never tried this brand or even heard of it but I sure am going to give it a google 🙂

  • I don’t know much about this brand but it’s nice that it’s easy to access! I have oily and very acne-prone skin so I’m always a bit nervous when trying out an entire line of natural skincare products. But Shoppers has a good policy from what I remember so perhaps I could give it a try anyways!

    Stacey, thebambieyes.com

    • Ohh, yeah the cleanser probably wouldn’t be enough if you have oily skin already. I have returned a few items to shopper’s because they didn’t work for me. They have a good return policy 🙂

  • A shame about the scent of that cleanser because the ingredients list has me wanting to run and buy it, damnation! Thanks for sharing xxx

    ALittleKiran | Bloglovin

    • Yeah! If you can get over the funky smell it isn’t too bad… but it’s hard to get over when you’re putting it all over your face haha

  • Great detailed review. Have you heard of Credo? They’re all organic, natural products that might be what you’re looking for!

  • LOL!! old 90’s lip product scents–the inner nose inside my brain was just filled with the memory of the scent of my mom’s old red lipsticks in her old flowered makeup bag. #mychildhood. That toner actually does sound excellent– I have also been wary of the idea of rubbing alcohol into my face–that sounds way too toxic. so a natural toner sounds like something I would be interested in. I’m going to start researching some more natural toners.

I am definitely with you when it comes to that neverending “hunt” for my HG skincare products. It’s just NOT EASY one bit! 🙂 However, this is so refreshing (and promising) to read this review. The scent is, of course, something that would put me off in a heartbeat but overall, well done, Dr Roebuck’s! By the way, thank you so much for the “tip” about St Ives Apricot Facial Scrub. I have been using it for a while, and at first I was like “wow, I LOVE it”, it changed to “what’s causing these awful dry patches???”. Now I might know the answer. As always, fantastic review, sweetie!
Hope you’re having a fab week!!!
